Three tips to help you add a dose of sunshine to your next subject line
1. Use summer references
You don’t have to sell sunscreen or bathing suits to reference summer. Our list of summer subject lines proves that, but here are a few ways that you can bring some summer flair to your emails:
- Celebrate summer holidays like Memorial Day and Labor Day with a discount.
- When the temperature rises, host a Heat Wave sale.
- Provide solutions to summer problems like sunburn or mosquitoes.
- Create a list of lawn maintenance tricks or fun tips for family barbecues.
You can also use common summer words in your subject lines. Here are a few suggestions:
- Summer descriptions: heat wave, high temps, fun-in-the-sun, mercury-rising, beat the heat, dog days of summer
- Summer places: cabin, lake, beach, park
- Summer must-haves: bathing suit, sunglasses, beach bags, flip flops
- Summer events: bbq, picnics, family reunions, road trips
- Summer chores: lawn maintenance, gardening, home repair
- Summer safety: sunblock, water, sun exposure
2. Use movie or song titles
You can connect with your customers in a lighthearted and personal way by incorporating pop culture references into your subject lines. What’s more, a study from Retention Science shows emails with song titles get opened 26 percent of the time, which is an 11 percent higher open rate than those without a title. So why not add a summer-themed song title to your subject line, or reference a classic summer movie?
3. Mimic personal email format
Summer is a great time to have fun with your email subject lines, but don’t go overboard. If you wouldn’t send the subject line to a friend, you shouldn’t send it to customers or donors either. In other words, don’t capitalize every letter, stay away from Wingdings or emoticons, and avoid excessive punctuation. Some people use these embellishments to make their subject lines standout, but they can make your email look less professional. You can (and should) be creative with this process, but you don’t need these “extras” to draw attention.
